The MB-2 bass combines the warmth of an upright bass with the punch of a solid body. It is a lightweight hybrid, semi-hollow instrument that is organic in sound and feel. The MB-2 is a handmade bass of the highest quality, featuring hand selected tone woods, minimal finish for optimum resonance, and high quality electronics that feature a discreet signal path for pure unadulterated bass tone. The La Bella 760n strings feature a steel core with a smooth nylon outer wrapping, which contribute to ease of intonation. In a word, you've never picked up a fretless bass that's this easy to play in tune.

MB-2F + £330

The MB-2 is also available as a fretted model. The MB-2f features tiny mandolin sized frets and an Indian Rosewood fingerboard. Indian Rosewood, while certainly a hard wood, is less heavy and dense than the ebony and cocobolo used on fretless models. This “softer” wood helps to offset the addition of subtle brightness added by frets, and creates a beautiful full yet clear tone. The bridge is also made of the same material, and can be adjusted for intonation. The small frets make for a very comfortable feel, improve intonation due to their low profile, and will last practically forever as the nylon wrapped 760n strings cause very little wear.

Also available as a Mb 26 string by special order

Many studio pros know the secret of how unique short scale basses sound. The lower string tension provided by the short scale has several benefits - easy playability, sweet upper register tones and fat blooming low end, not to mention the added nuance that comes naturally when playing this type of bass. Unlike most short scale basses available, The Mouse 30 bass is hand crafted to the highest professional quality. And though it shares the same high quality materials as the MB-2 bass, you'll find the Mouse 30 definitely has a personality all its own.

If you’re looking for the best possible acoustic style bass tone in a compact package that does not feed back, this may be the instrument you’ve been waiting for. The Deep 4 and Deep 5 basses build on the tone of the mb-2 bass and take it to the next level. It features a thicker, more hollow body with f-hole, that creates warmth and complex overtones, a solid centre block and a super rigid 5 piece laminate neck. These elements combine to achieve a superior bass tone that has it all; clarity, warmth and a little bit of “wool”.

Features:
• all materials hand selected
• 5 piece laminate neck of rock maple with ebony stringers
• ebony fingerboard and bridge
• matching bound koa headstock
• semi hollow alder body
• premium curly koa top with f-hole
• celluloid “tortoise shell” binding
• volume, and stacked bass/treble control on bridge
• ergonomically balanced
• sculpted body at neck heel
• alder wood back plate
• approx weight 7.5 lbs
• form fit hardshell case included

• options: lined or unlined fingerboard

Some of the finer points of the Deep 4/5 basses:

Neck:

Rob select every piece of wood himself. Why a laminate neck you ask? All wood moves to some degree with changes in humidity and temperature. By combining 3 pieces of rock maple and two ebony strips, you have 5 pieces of wood that when properly oriented will all move in different directions from one another, in effect cancelling each other out, creating a more stable and rigid neck. Since the body of the Deep 4/5 is extra hollow, the most rigid neck is needed to produce a strong fundamental tone. The fingerboard is ebony, and is made from the same stock as the bridge, for a perfect match. All the wood is dried to 6% humidity or below, and a non-water based glue is used during construction, as to not destabilise the wood.

Body:

The body starts out with 3” thick alder stock and is surfaced down to 2 1/8”, and routed with large hollow chambers , leaving a 1 3/4” wide centre block (see photo). These large hollow chambers in combination with the f-hole make the body lighter and less rigid, which adds resonance, warmth and overtones. The f-hole does not add much noticeable volume, it is about creating TONE. The volume is achieved through the pickup system. You will not experience feedback with a Deep 4/5, they can be used in stadium size venues with no feedback issues whatsoever. The top is made from the finest curly koa wood from Hawaii. Koa is an established tone wood and is about as beautiful as wood can get. Finding curly koa of this quality is rare, and the supply limited, as this wood is only harvested in small amounts, and only from downed or dead trees. The body gets about 4 coats of penetrating oil, which is a finish that goes into the wood and hardens, as opposed to a film finish which sits atop the wood. Film finishes (lacquer, polyurethane and the vast majority of modern guitar finishes) act as dampeners on vibration (imagine some tape on a snare drum head to reduce the volume). The extremely thin finish is a big part of letting the instrument “breathe”.

Electronics:

The Deep 4/5 basses feature electronics designed specifically for these models. The circuitry is super clean and minimal, and features a master volume and a stacked treble/bass control, both integrated into the ebony bridge. I’m a purist when it comes to tone and believe an instrument should do one thing really well, as opposed to doing a few things pretty good, and that is my aim with this bass; to give the best, fullest, jaw dropping tone possible.

Solid 4

Solid 4 solid body 4 string bass £3750

quarter sawn maple neck, rosewood f.b., vintage frets, lightweight swamp ash body, oil finish, hand wound alnico 2 pickup, volume & tone controls. Includes American made form fit hardshell case

  1. options: Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard +400

  2. extra single coil coil pickup +£250

Over the years I have had quite a few requests for a solid body bass. The new Solid 4 is built with the same concept as my other basses: that the tone starts in the wood, that it should vibrate well so that notes easily flow out of it, that it produces a fat tone, and has a great worn~in feel when you first pick it up.

SOLID 4 STANDARD FEATURES

  1. 34" scale

  2. 9.5" fingerboard radius

  3. quarter sawn maple neck (more rigid than slab sawn necks)

  4. rosewood fingerboard with rolled edges for worn~in feel

  5. vintage sized frets, dressed slightly inside the edges of the fingerboard.

  6. swamp ash body

  7. thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish

  8. original design solid aluminium bridge, incorporating volume and tone

  9. original design single coil magnetic pickup, Alnico 2 magnets

  10. lacquered phenolic pickguard (Italian celluloid optional)

  11. original design string anchor

  12. 7.25 lbs

A FEW OF THE FINER POINTS OF THE SOLID 4 BASS

The Solid 4 is ergonomically designed with the bridge near the end of the body, creating better balance points with no neck dive, and a bass that is about 3 inches shorter than most electric basses, while retaining full scale length. It features a super tight neck joint, requiring considerable force to install it on the body. This creates very good coupling for tone transfer.

By the same token, the solid aluminium bridge features no moving parts (yet is adjustable for intonation by moving the saddle), and is inset 1/4" into the ash body, providing coupling to the wood, not to a finish film on the top of the body like most basses. The volume and tone controls are incorporated into the design of the bridge.

The thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish allows the instrument to breathe better. Under a microscope, this material is porous and allows the wood to continually season and dry, unlike plastic/polyester films, which are not porous and permanently seal the wood.

The neck is the best quarter sawn rock maple. This makes a much stiffer neck than the typical slab sawn wood used on most factory (and many custom shop) basses. This critical choice of material makes for a strong punchy fundamental tone with good sustain, the lightweight swamp ash body adds the warmth.

The pickup is hand wound using Alnico 2 magnets. These magnets have less string pull than Alnico 5 (the most common material) and allow for a more “open” tone since the string can vibrate more freely under a softer magnetic field (just like a 50 year old pickup would).

The fingerboard edges are considerably softened, with the fret edges dressed just inside of the fingerboard edges. These creates a buttery smooth feel with no discernible fret ends.
